Research at the University of Pretoria is at the heart of our long term plan, UP 2025, and our vision to be a leading research-intensive university in Africa, recognised for making a difference. Our progress towards achieving this vision and identity is evident in the diversity of research undertaken in the nine Faculties and one Business School, and in the many Institutes, Centres and Units.
UP’s strategy builds on areas of research strength to achieve ever increasing levels of relevance and impact, a strategy which is directly linked to our commitment to addressing major challenges on the African continent and globally. The focus on relevance and impact means that there has been a growing emphasis on multidisciplinary and collaborative work across knowledge and geographic boundaries. Particularly important to the University are the collaborative partnerships with research groups, universities and institutions in Africa. While all faculties and research entities will continue to foreground a focus on Africa, it is anticipated that the new Future Africa campus will be a place where Africa’s leading scientists and scholars will come together to leverage the benefits of transdisciplinary research.
The University takes great pride in the research output and quality of our researchers, from the A-rated scientists and established researchers, to the emerging young talent who, taken together, make up UP’s research community. Researcher achievements are annually recognised in the Academic Achievement Awards, and showcased in a Research Review that illustrates the scale of research undertaken at UP. Contributing to a research environment in which scientists are supported are the facilities and services offered, for example by the Department of Research and Innovation Support (DRIS) and the Libraries. The University also maintains an institutional repository, UPSpace, an open access electronic archive that collects, preserves and distributes digital material created, owned and hosted by UP.
The Research Matters website showcases and highlights some of the University’s research and innovation output and emphasises the impact of this work in South Africa, Africa and globally. On these pages, you will find case studies on interesting research projects by University staff, infographics and videos that will provide an overview of high impact projects at a glance, as well as information about various institutes, centres and units.
